A bowl of cooked Quick Whole Grain Cereal

When it’s cold out there, Campers, a warm bowl of cooked whole grain cereal for breakfast can be very comforting.  Here’s a hot cereal that’s as fast as oatmeal, but with a heartier flavor and texture.

QUICK WHOLE GRAIN CEREAL (Pantry Cooking II)

1 cup rolled oats (not quick oats)
1 cup rolled barley flakes
1 cup rolled wheat flakes

Pulse oats 3 or 4 times in a blender or food processor. Repeat with barley and wheat flakes. Stir the pulsed oats, barley, and wheat together until evenly distributed. Store in an airtight container.

To cook: Bring 1 cup water and 1/8 teaspoon salt to a boil in a small saucepan. Stir in 1/2 cup cereal. Reduce heat slightly. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat; cover. Let sit until cereal is the desired consistency. Serve with milk and brown sugar or honey. Serves 1.

Note:  Triticale and/or rye flakes may be added or substituted for any of the other flakes.

If you can’t find barley or wheat flakes in your grocery store, they can be found online or ordered through Azure Standard. Store them like you do rolled oats.
